Board of Education Takes Action on School Closures

Hello Hudson Families and Staff,

On Monday, October 13, 2025, the Board of Education made the very difficult decision to close Houlton Elementary and Willow River Elementary at the end of this school year. We recognize that this news brings many emotions – sadness, disappointment, and uncertainty. While change of this magnitude is never easy, we are committed to supporting our students, families, and staff every step of the way. 

In the coming weeks, the District will begin developing a comprehensive transition plan. This plan  will include:

• Engaging families and staff in setting new elementary attendance boundaries.

• Developing support for students academically, socially, and emotionally as they get to know their new school.

• Ensuring staff are supported and valued through a robust staffing process.

Transition Plan Timeline

New elementary attendance boundaries - determined by February 2026

• During January, the District will work with consultants from MGT to provide multiple opportunities for families and staff to give feedback on proposed elementary attendance boundary options. 

• A final decision on boundaries will be made by the end of February.

Staffing considerations - Spring 2026

• Human Resources and Teaching & Learning will be working with certified and support staff to gather input on reassignment preferences.

• Certified staff are expected to have notice of position reassignments or potential lay offs by the second week of March (prior to Spring Break).

• Support staff are expected to have notice of position reassignments or potential lay offs by late April.

Student/Family Transition Activities - Spring 2026

• Principals from all of the elementary schools will be putting together a variety of activities to support children and families who are changing schools. These activities will take place in the spring and before school starts.

Student Transportation Routes - Spring/Summer 2026

• During the spring and summer, bus routes will be designed based on new school assignments.

• Communication to families regarding bus routes will be communicated in early August. 

We know that both Houlton and Willow River Elementary schools hold a special place in many hearts, and that closing a school impacts more than just a building. As we move through this transition, it is important to remember that we as a school community are resilient. Together, we will ensure that our students and staff continue to thrive and feel a strong sense of belonging in their new school.
